"Penderyn"
One of the Premier Estates on the East Coast
'Penderyn' is a majestic, red brick mansion sited on
its own 25 acre peninsula of gently contoured land
projecting into the historic Wye River at its confluence
with deCoursey Cove. Opposite are the green banks of
the Wye Island Preserve. The manor is bounded by water
on three sides and enjoys a central siting amidst
gracious lawns, wild flower meadows and abundant English
gardens. The eye is deceived by its classical symmetry
and stately columns to imagine that Penderyn must be a
contemporary of the Wye River plantation houses once
occupied by America's founding fathers. Closer
inspection reveals, however, that it is a modern
recreation of a Regency manor house: true to its
heritage with hand-made brick, corbelled chimneys,
classic columns and stately proportions, but blessed
with every possible convenience and contrivance of the
modern world to make living a joy.
Approached by a winding gravel driveway, Penderyn
exemplifies the restraint and respect for symmetry
which is the hallmark of the Georgian style. No
extraneous ornamentation has been allowed to distract
from the purity of this classic form. Note that even
the landscaping at its entrance esplanade has been
designed with a sparing hand to ensure privacy but to
avoid competing with the architect's restrained façade.
What a shame if an exterior of such majestic size and
scale were to give way, as sometimes happens, to an
interior that is formal, austere and cold. The magic
of Penderyn is how completely that risk was avoided.
Talented architects and interior designers worked for
years to accomplish brilliantly the challenging task of
fitting a warm and inviting family home into Penderyn's
imposing exterior structure. The secret was to modulate
the large scale of the home into rooms with pleasing
proportions for intimate gatherings and normal family
living and thus avoid excess formality. No sacrifice
was made however to the suitability of Penderyn for
large scale entertaining - both formal and informal.
Ceilings are a spectacular twelve feet high; principal
first floor rooms and upstairs bedroom suites are graced
with wood burning fireplaces and antique mantel
surrounds imported from Europe. Windows reach from
floor to ceiling and offer compelling views of the many
moods of the river Wye. Nothing testifies more
eloquently to Penderyn's modern conception and
construction than its extravagant placement of windows
to flood all interior spaces with sunlight and river
views. Its orientation ensures that sunrise each day is
a special visual gift to early risers and that all must
stop what they are doing each evening to enjoy
spectacular sunsets mirrored in the peaceful waters of
the Wye.
Penderyn has no peers on Maryland's Eastern Shore for
its combination of exclusive private setting and
convenient location. Minutes away by auto are all the
shopping necessities. Penderyn is in Queenstown, which
is centered between the premier sailing venues of
Annapolis and Easton. Washington, Baltimore and
Philadelphia are within easy driving distance. All of
the elements are here for a very special family to live
a life that recreates the tranquility and gentility of
the past. Added, however, are modern versions of huge
closets and luxury bathrooms and amenities that the
most privileged of our ancestors could not even have
imagined. For many generations to come, Penderyn will
stand as tribute to the best of eighteenth century taste
and design and to the most scrupulous execution of
twentieth century building skills. It is truly unique.
